Sundance Short Films 2021 (90 mins total)

The Sundance Film Festival has long been revered as an influential platform for filmmakers. Every year the festival manages to discover a new wave of original voices and has become a true launching pad for new filmmakers.

Mobile Kino presents a special preview screening of the 2021 Sundance Short Films. A program of seven short films will be screened on the island on Tuesday night.

The Short Films

BJ’s Mobile Gift Shop / U.S.A. (Director and Screenwriter: Jason Park) — A young Korean-American hustler runs throughout the city of Chicago making sales out of his “mobile gift shop.” U.S. Fiction

Jason Park was born and raised in the city of Chicago, Jason Park pursued filmmaking after a year of missionary work on the island of Palau. He’s made several short films that have played in numerous international film festivals and has been selected for programs like Film Independent’s Project Involve and the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Intensive. He currently resides in Los Angeles, where he is developing his first feature film.

Black Bodies / Canada (Director and Screenwriter: Kelly Fyffe-Marshall) — A Black man laments as he comes face-to-face with the realities of being Black in the 21st century. International Fiction

Kelly Fyffe-Marshall is a director, screenwriter, and social activist whose work includes award-winning short film Haven (2018) and two-part short film Black Bodies and Marathon (2020). Marathon was released online and has amassed more than 25,000 views. Black Bodies was selected for the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival and awarded the Shawn Mendes Foundation Changemaker Award for social change through film.

The Criminals / France, Romania, Turkey (Director and Screenwriter: Serhat Karaaslan) — In a town in Turkey, a young couple is looking for some privacy. They are rejected from the hotels because they do not have a marriage certificate. When they think they found a way, the situation gets out of hand. The Criminals received the 2021 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Writing. – International Fiction.

Serhat Karaaslan has directed one feature film and several shorts. His short films were screened and awarded in major festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival and Festival del film Locarno. His debut film, Passed by Censor (Cannes Cinéfondation Residence), premiered at the 2019 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it received the critics award, and won several awards at festivals around the world.

KKUM / South Korea, U.S.A. (Director and Screenwriter: Kang-min Kim) — My mother’s dreams have always been strong premonitions for important moments in my life. I rely on her dreams more than any religion. – Animation

Kang-min Kim was born in Incheon, South Korea, in 1979. In 2011 he graduated from the California Institute of the Arts. He is currently working as a freelance artist.

To Know Her / U.S.A., Hong Kong (Director: Natalie Chao) — A poetic exploration of the camera’s gaze and a family’s relationship with the filmmaker’s mother. – Non-Fiction

Natalie A. Chao is a filmmaker and cinematographer who completed her bachelor’s degree in film production at University of Southern California. Born, raised, and currently based in Hong Kong, she is interested in bridging the gap between realism and poetry in order to tell stories through a more engaged and intentional gaze—one that can map out our memories, not drawing lines between camera and subject, identity and politics. She is currently a 2020 Sundance Ignite x Adobe Fellow.

White Wedding / U.S.A. (Director and Screenwriter: Melody C. Roscher) — Amidst a racially tense Southern wedding, a biracial bride has the chance to confront her estranged Black father after accidentally hiring his wedding band to perform. – U.S. Fiction
Melody C. Roscher hails from Richmond, Virginia, and New York City, and she is developing her feature directorial debut, Bird in Hand. In addition to directing, she’s half of the producing team The Wonder Club, with Craig Shilowich. Together, they are producing Robin Comisar’s upcoming feature Great Choice. Roscher recently produced Christine, James White, Creative Control, and Simon Killer, as well as line-producing HBO’s The Jinx.

Wiggle Room / U.S.A. (Directors and Screenwriters: Sam Guest, Julia Baylis) — Determined to save her wheelchair ramp from repossession, Daisy confronts the shady insurance agent who owes her money. Wiggle Room received the 2021 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Acting. – U.S. Fiction.
Sam Guest and Julia Baylis are an American-Canadian directing duo who collaborate under their production company Anarene Films. Their projects have been featured on Dazed, The FADER, and NPR. Wiggle Room is their first narrative film.

– Wir bitten unsere Gäste beim Eintreten des Kinos eine Schutzmaske zu tragen, sowie auch beim Reihe stehen , am Kiosk, in den Toiletten und beim Sitzen. Leider können Sie ohne Schutzmaske nicht das Kino betreten. Das Tragen der Schutzmaske im Sitzplatz ist keine Pflicht, aber wir begrüssen es sehr und bedanken uns, wenn Sie sie trotzdem nicht ablegen.
– Gäste, die sich krank fühlen, bitten wir von einem Besuch im Kino abzuhalten. Tickets können kostenlos storniert werden bis max. 24 Stunden vor Filmstart. Bitte schreiben Sie eine Email an mail@mobilekino.de in das angegeben Zeitfenster.
– Zur Zeit verkaufen wir nur Online Tickets. An der Abendkasse gibt es keine Bargeldtickets, aber Sie können auch kurzfristig mit ihrem Smartphone EIntrittskarten kaufen, so lange noch Karten vorhanden sind.
– Bei Online Tickets wird eine Kontaktperson mit Angabe von Namen und Emailadresse dokumentiert, um eine Kontaktpersonenermittlung im Falle eines nachträglich identifizierten Covid-19 Falles unter Gästen oder Personal sicherzustellen. Eine Übermittlung dieser Informationen darf ausschließlich zum Zwecke der Auskunftserteilung, auf Anforderung, gegenüber den zuständigen Gesundheitsbehörden erfolgen. Die Daten bleiben für 4 Wochen gespeichert.
– Unser Hygienekonzept sieht eine Reduzierung unserer Sitzplatzkapazität zu einem Drittel vor. Je nach Location ändert sich die Anzahl der Plätze.

To be able to protect our staff and customers we ask you to kindly follow these rules:

– All seats are spaced 1.5 m from each other, in groups of 2. Some chairs can be moved to make up groups of 3 (for visitors of the same household) or single. Please ask for help if this is the case.
– We kindly ask you to use a mask when entering the cinema (including queue), when approaching the bar, going to the toilet and when in your seat. Unfortunately, without a mask we will not allow you to enter the screening. Wearing a mask in you seat is not compulsory but we kindly ask you to wear it at all times.
– If you are feeling unwell we ask you to please not attend a screening. Refunds can be made up to 24 hours before the screening. Please inform us in writing to mail@mobilekino.de
– For the time being, we are SELLING ONLY ONLINE TICKETS. We advise you to do so beforehand. At the box office, we won’t sell cash tickets, but you are welcome to use your Smartphone there and purchase your tickets last minute, as long as there is still capacity.
– Online tickets will record an email and name per booking. This will be used to identifying and keep track of all visitors to one particular screening. In case someone who attended ends up testing positive to COVID-19 this information can be passed on to the health authorities if requested. This is part of the official governmental guidelines. This information will be kept for 1 month from the date of the screening.
– According to our Hygiene concept, we have reduced our screening spaces to a third of capacity. Each capacity will vary depending on the venue.
