Ballroom culture is a historical movement beginning in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Evolving from the underground drag scene, Ballroom is a safe space for gender-fluid and trans individuals to express themselves in a celebratory way. The Ballroom scene as we know it today, home to mainly gay and trans people, experienced a renaissance in the 1970s.

A ball is a competition, where members of different houses “walk” (perform) against each other. All participants compete in different categories like ‘Face’, ‘Vogue Performance’, ‘Best Dressed’ and ‘Runway’. The categories are often connected to topics like beauty, fashion and social status.

Although the dancers of international houses compete against each other, the atmosphere at a ball is always highly positive and supportive. It’s a safe space for its contestants and everyone who respects the rules is welcome.

More infos about Voguing:

To pick up the current zeitgeist and provide a cultural background with the Voguing Ball, the ball is happening under the motto “Voguing Ball of Superheroes”.

The theme “Superheroes” refers to all icons that have changed the world and/or the life of an individual either if it‘s a superstar, a fictional character, friends, a nurse or even the neighbour. Anyone can be a superhero to someone by using their power to fight, help or care for someone or a community – any day, any time. There is no gender, no age, no orientation, no race when it comes to support. Each one of us is a superhero with a superpower to embrace, appreciate and use to make the world a better place.

At the local organisation Lambda BB e.V., young queers work to improve their living situation. In other words, for more freedom, more opportunities, more social participation. More networking and exchange. And less discrimination, less fear, less wry looks.
