Berliner Ballade (1948), presented by Mark Reeder
Berliner Ballade is one of the first comedies made in the era after World War II. Beginning in 2048 and jumping back to show life in Berlin hundred years earlier, the film stars Gert Fröbe – Goldfinger in the James Bond movie Goldfinger – in his first feature role.
Now, you can experience the rarely-screened Ballade for yourself – with the only version that has English subtitles. The fact this version exists at all is down to the determination of Berlin music legend Mark Reeder.
“I first saw Berliner Ballade in the mid-1980s on TV and immediately, I scrambled to record it on my VHS player,” says Mark. “It shows a striking image of post-war Berlin like no other film.” He later undertook a mammoth mission to find a reel of the film and then later had the English subtitles added. It’s a unique film and a unique opportunity to enjoy it.
